Here is a little synopsis: Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet.
Fannie Flagg is a very funny and talented writer. I've read two of her books, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!, and really enjoyed both. Hope suggested we read one of her books, and this is her newest one.
Everyone who read this book enjoyed it. We all wanted to know the characters in the book and see Tot Whooten in her Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop, if only to see what she really looks like.
Elner is an old woman of indeterminate age who decides one morning to climb her fig tree for some fruit. She then falls out of the tree, dies, goes to heaven, and wakes at the hospital to tell her tale. What happens next is sweet and funny. It's what makes Fanny Flagg a wonderful writer. To be sure, there is a little preaching and social commentary on how to slow down your life. But that's not always a bad thing.
