Hunting Island State Park is found along the
Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles southeast of Buford, South
Carolina. Both Charleston, S.C. and Savannah, GA. are about a 90 minute trip
from there. However, there is plenty to do at the park, namely the beach. I'm
usually not one to spend all day at the beach, but after our very snowy winter,
it was the best place to be. We watched dolphins swim and baby turtles trying
to make their way home. We watched about a thousand fiddler crabs doing
absolutely nothing. Well, Maddie and I watched that while Duane kept Sammie from
jumping in the mud pit to join them. Duane saw an alligator about 10 feet off
the side of the road while we were riding our bikes. Luckily, by the time I had
turned around, it was gone! Too scary for me, no cage! All kinds of wildlife!
Of
course, we were in the worst storm they've had in those parts in March in years,
5 inches of rain in 36 hours. "That never happens here," the ranger said
unsuspectingly. So Duane decided that whenever we hear that phrase, we just
substitute "It's your fault." For example, "It rained 5 inches in 36 hours in
March, that never happens." becomes "It rained 5 inches in 36 hours in March,
it's your fault." Or if the situation is being explained to an unknowing third
party: "It rained 5 inches in 36 hours in March, there's a Kemper here
somewhere, so it's their fault." I think you get the idea.

After we dried off and realized we had the high ground at the campground, which was really funny because our camper was at the bottom of the hill (that never happens) we had an awesome time. Maddie and Sammie loved it and were great campers. They made new little friends and loved every second at the beach. They were very sad when we had to come home, as we all were when we had to unload the camper in good old Ohio in the snow. We all know that never happens!
If anyone is looking for a great place to camp, or even to visit for all those who go to Hilton Head, this place is awesome. It would probably be a bit buggy in the summer, but we plan on going back next Easter. Can't wait to see those dolphins swimming in that water and hear the best sound ever, the waves of the ocean!
