Incredibles

The Incredibles is the story of how the sue happy world stops super heroes from being super and turns them into everyday average people. The main characters of this adventure are Bob Parr (AKA Mr. Incredible voiced by Craig T Nelson), and Helen Parr (Elastigirl - voiced by Holly Hunter), who fought evil and saved lives on a daily basis. Frozone (voiced by Samuel L Jackson) is a friend from the old days. These super heroes are forced to take civilian identities in a super hero protection program where Bob is an insurance agent married to Helen with three incredible children forced to act "normal."

Mr. Incredible can't live in this average world, and must act when he receives a mysterious communication that summons him to a remote island for a top secret assignment. Fortunately for us, the family must forget they are normal and use their incredible powers to save the world.

The movie fleshes out the characters nicely, having Bob and Helen react in quite normal ways to situations that are both mundane and bizarre. Dash and Violet get to argue and fight, as well as protect each other. Sounds and feels pretty normal to me. The movie is about individuality and how being an individual is a good thing. As Dash states "saying everyone is special means no one is." Nice point in our current environment where standing out can be problematic.

The movie is often funny, with Edna Mode (voiced by the film's director Brad Bird), costume designer to the super heroes, having the best lines, and great riff about why capes are no good.

The animation is quite incredible as well. Although I think hand drawn animation is still preferable to computer animation when done right, computer animation is getting better with each Pixar film. If you have ever tried to animate with computer software, or even if you haven't, the wet hair is a new high point.

One warning: this movie is PG. We took Maddie to see it, and she liked it, but there is some violence (not very cartoon like). It's a nice family movie with quite a bit of action, but be aware of the rating.
