Alexander McCall Smith has written 4 wonderful stories set in Botswana and centered around Precious Ramotswe, a "traditionally sized", but otherwise non-traditional, private detective.

In the first book, Mme Ramotswe's father has died, leaving her a fortune in cattle.  She decides to sell the cattle and start a detective agency at the edge of the Kalahari Desert.  She never doubts the need for this operation and opens her new business by posting a sign stating "THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY. FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATTERS AND ENQUIRIES. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR ALL PARTIES. UNDER PERSONAL MANAGEMENT."  The cases she gets are as various as the problems in life. 

Mme Ramotswe helps people solve their difficulties in mostly gentle, sometimes funny, always logical manner.  Like any detective, she is giving them proof for what they already know.  These books are wonderful for many reasons.  The writing is good, the characters are interesting, the setting magnificent.  These books are well worth reading!
